FAMILY SERVICES SPECIALIST (FSS) - NUTRITION (Registered Dietitian)

LOCATION: San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valley

DEFINITION:

Provide a comprehensive nutrition service program which includes, a broad range of nutrition services to preschool children, including children with disabilities, to assist the child’s physical, emotional, cognitive and social development toward the overall goal of social competence.  As well as dental hygiene.

Promote preventive nutrition services and early intervention.  Assist families in enhancing their skills and insight in the area of nutrition to ensure that the child continues to receive comprehensive care even after leaving the Head Start program.  

GENERAL DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITES:
This position has functional responsibility for planning, implements and evaluating the nutrition services program. This includes establishing effective methods of meeting the nutrition needs of children and their families, rendering services required by the performance standards, and providing nutrition education to staff and families within the agency.

Supervises and coordinates the development and updating, on an annual basis, the delegate agency’s Service Area Plan, nutrition services specifically.  Develops policies and procedures for providing and evaluating nutritional care.  Establish effective lines of communication between members of Nutrition Services team.
 
Provides technical assistance to program staff working directly with children and families.
Oversees the obtaining of complete nutrition and dental history for each child.
Oversees the nutrition screening and the dental examinations for each child.
Oversees and approves all menus of the program.
Assists staff in the obtaining or arranging for treatment of all nutrition services for children, including follow up treatment.
Oversees the maintenance of nutrition records for all children.
Develops policies and procedures for responding to nutrition emergencies.
Reviews, evaluates, interprets nutrition records, vital statistics and other data affecting health services in order to assess needs to plan and implement special programs or activities to meet these needs.
Counsels parents concerning specific family nutrition concerns and integrates theses as part of the Family Partnerships Agreements developed by the family.
Attends all meetings required by delegate agency or Grantee management.
Reviews and evaluates nutrition services activities to insure compliance with Head Start performance standards and other State and local regulations.
Provides training and technical assistance, specific to nutrition services, to all program staff.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
Provides general nutrition assessment and treatment based upon standardized procedures to children enrolled under the supervision of a physician.
Will identify and work wit program families to meet special dietary needs, including food allergies.
Will provide nutritional trainings and workshops to parents and staff.
Will work closely with overweight and underweight children.
Will attend trainings and share information gathered.
Will work closely with Nutritional Assistant in developing and implementing menu meals which meet the USDA guidelines.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED/EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:
Graduation from an accredited School; and current and valid California license as a Registered Dietician.

EXPERIENCE:
Two years of experience in nutrition or related area; Minimum one year experience as a Registered Dietician in administration or supervision.

HEALTH REQUIREMENTS:
Must have verification of T.B. clearance at the time of employment issued within six (6) months prior to employment, to be renewed every year.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Must meet State Health Requirements.  In order to travel among sites as needed, must have a valid California Driver’s License, access to an automobile and adequate automobile insurance coverage, or have available private transportation.  Fingerprint clearance required prior to employment.
