Upward Bound

Location(s): Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, North Hollywood, Pacoima, San Fernando, Westminster

Serving students at Roosevelt High, Dorsey High, Crenshaw High, Washington Preparatory, North Hollywood High, San Fernando High, Polytechnic High and Westminster High. Upward Bound provides fundamental support and preparation for college. Serving more than 500 students annually from low-income families and/or high school students from families in which neither parent holds a college degree.

The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from post-secondary education. We provide after-school academic instruction in core subjects and foreign languages, as well as PSAT, SAT, and ACT test preparation. Career exploration and mentoring are also an integral component to assist participants in deciding on potential college majors and career options.

We also provide college and career planning workshops, a summer program, individualized academic planning and counseling, financial aid advising, scholarship and application assistance, supplemental Saturday instruction and weekly tutoring as well as college and cultural field trips and an alumni program.

Educational Talent Search

Location(s): Los Angeles and North Hollywood

Providing support and information on all aspects of planning for admission to – and graduation from – a post-secondary institution. The primary focus of the ETS program is to identify low-income, first-generation students who are at risk of dropping out of high school. Students at Dorsey High School, Crenshaw High School, North Hollywood High School, in grades 9th-12th are eligible for enrollment.

Each year, we serve more than 1500 high school students. The program provides advancement information to assist students in graduating from high school, completing their A-G requirements, and assisting them in planning for college entrance exams as well as college and financial aid applications, as well as career development assistance. The goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education, enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education.

Homeless Youth Services

Volunteers of America of Los Angeles provides housing and supportive services for homeless youth including LGBTQ, sexually exploited/sex trafficked, runaways and kids that have aged out of foster care and/or were previously incarcerated. Housing can be short-term or long-term, depending on the needs of the youth. These youth are amazingly resilient. The services that we provide to them at this stage in their lives will help move from the inevitable path of homelessness and incarceration and onto a path of self-sufficiency and self-confidence. Needed services include counseling, advocacy, mental health services, education services, job development, and life skills, all with the vision of getting them back on their feet and ultimately becoming self-sufficient.

Gang Reduction Youth Development

VOALA operates two GRYD programs that provide a safe, supportive environment where young people can transition out of the gang culture and learn to develop the ability to live independently with pride and dignity.

The GRYD Teams will be working on-site at the facility and throughout the community with youth and families, providing individualized case management with wraparound services, and a broad range of alternatives to gang activities, violence and crime in order to reduce gang violence and promote positive youth development.    The program offers activities and events, classes, direct service and referrals so that the young people we serve have a greater possibility of shifting their futures from a life involved with gangs to one of peace, positivity and health.

Women’s Care Cottage

Location(s): North Hollywood

Women’s Care Cottage is an Independent/Transitional living program assisting homeless young women coming out of emergency shelters, foster care and probation.  Women’s Care Cottage is a safe place where young women who have been either critically homeless or in the criminal justice or foster care system can start a new life and develop the ability to live independently with pride and dignity while accomplishing their goals.

Participants are women ages 18-21 including pregnant women or women with one child up to 1 years old. Residents must participate in their personal action plan to work towards their personal goals to become employed and/or attend school while saving for their future.

We provide up to 18 months – 3 years of housing, case management, counseling, social and cultural activities. We assist with drug and alcohol rehabilitation referrals, job training/job placement, legal referrals, advocacy to ID & SSI, permanent housing referrals, and life skills including Budgeting, Job Preparation, Resume Building, Interviewing Work Shops, Anger Management, Therapy, Women’s Health, Cooking, Hygiene Communication Skills, Building Self-Esteem and Developing Relationships, Independence skills and Self-Sufficiency.

Positive Alternatives

Location(s): South Los Angeles

Offered in schools and community centers throughout South Los Angeles, Positive Alternatives is a safe haven for many of LA’s youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about life’s options and the choices they can make. The program provides special support for “at–risk” males ages 6–11, and their families. Services include: Drug Abuse Prevention and Education, Cultural Enhancement, Parenting Education, Career Development, Family Mentoring, Remedial Education, and Math and Science Tutoring.

Mentorship at UCLA

Location(s): North Hollywood

This is a unique one–on–one mentoring program that pairs UCLA students with youth aged 7–17 from our North Hollywood Apartments community. Mentors participate in purposeful programs with their mentees to create a network of trust and support, empower them to further discover and follow their passions, challenge them to gain a broader understanding of the world around them, inspire them to pursue higher education, and motivate them towards civic engagement in the community.
