VOALA’s North Hollywood Apartments

Enhancement & Expansion Project

North Hollywood Apartments, 6724 Tujunga Avenue, North Hollywood, CA 91606

What is the project?

The North Hollywood Garden Apartments Enhancement and Expansion Project is part of a new VOALA transitional housing program for those at risk of becoming homeless. The project will add 49 new one- and two-bedroom housing units, along with additional parking.

The project also includes improvements to utility infrastructure including water, parking, and trash pickup capacity to accommodate the new units.

Where will the new units be located?

These new units will be placed behind existing units to preserve the area’s historic designation. Construction of the new units will be done in phases to minimize any disruption to existing tenants.

When does construction begin?

Construction is set to begin in March 2023. We will update this website when a specific start date is determined.

How long will the construction take?

Construction will be done in phases to minimize disruption as much as possible.

How will this affect my apartment?

The construction will not affect your apartment. However, personal items stored outside the apartment building may need to be moved during construction.

Will this affect my parking space?

YES. During construction, parking spaces will be reassigned as needed to a temporary parking area. Parking location details will be available in the future.

Will the community garden still be available?

YES. The community garden will be available during construction.

What’s the purpose of the project?

The new units will be prioritized for families whose life circumstances have left them without a place to live. VOALA will oversee and provide supportive services to these families in need to help them get back on their feet and move into permanent housing.

Who can I contact if I have concerns or more questions?

If you have any concerns or further questions before or during construction, please call the VOALA Rental Office at (818) 769-3617.

Historical Property Status

The North Hollywood Apartments was historically known as North Hollywood Manor. As part of SurveyLA, North Hollywood Manor was determined eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), the California Register of Historical Resources (CRHR), and as a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument for its architectural significance.

North Hollywood Manor was designed and constructed between 1949 and 1950. The property was designed by Heth Wharton and Ralph Vaughn in a Minimal Traditional style. Vaughn was an African American draftsman and movie set designer who received his architectural license after the completion of North Hollywood Manor. Wharton was listed as the project architect and Vaughn as the stylist; this team was responsible for two other designated garden apartment complexes from the same period, Lincoln Place and Chase Knolls Garden Apartments (both Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments).
