Trio Programs Impact

VOALA is Proud to Support Student Success for Over 50 Years

Volunteers of America Los Angeles (VOALA) has supported TRIO programs since 1971, and was one of the first non-profit organizations to be funded by the federal government for TRIO Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs.

The federal government created TRIO programs to increase college access, retention, and completion among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. “TRIO” referred to the first three programs funded in 1965 under the federal Higher Education Act. It has grown to include more than three programs providing academic, financial, and personal support to help students navigate and succeed in higher education. Since its creation in 1965, TRIO participants have been more likely to complete high school, enroll in college, and graduate than their peers.

VOALA’s Upward Bound program prepares high school students who are from low-income or first-generation backgrounds for college. Services offered at eight Los Angeles area high schools include:

  • academic tutoring and mentoring
  • college admissions and financial aid assistance
  • summer academic enrichment programs
  • career exploration
  • leadership development

Educational Talent Search supports middle and high school students (grades 6-12) from low-income families or whose parents did not complete a bachelor’s degree with similar services.

Today, VOALA’s combined programs serve over 500 students annually—and according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education, over 6 million students have participated in TRIO programs.
